Dry Needling or more accurately, Trigger Point Dry Needling, (TrP-DN) is a treatment which involves inserting an extremely fine, single use sterile needle, (acupuncture needle) into a Trigger Point (TrP)*. esearch studies have found this to be extremely effective in releasing muscle pain and dysfunction. The approach is based on Western anatomical and neurophysiological principles and is not to be confused with Chinese Acupuncture. 71% of Trigger Points coincide with acupoints (in Acupuncture).

A TrP may develop following an acute muscular strain or traumatic event such as during a car accident, a fall, sprain or fracture, or excessive or unusual exercise.  Chronic overload of the muscles used to maintain posture due to poor sitting, working or sleeping habits, or any repetitive movements may also result in TrP formation.  We all tend to have movement or posture patterns which can lead to muscular imbalances & the formation of TrP’s.  In addition TrP’s can also form due to poor core stability, incorrect bending & lifting, disc injuries or degenerative conditions & by injured or compressed nerves.  If the spinal nerves become compressed or irritated, the muscles that the nerves supply become more irritable and likely to develop TrP’s.  R

*A Trigger Point (TrP) is defined as a hyperirritable spot within a muscle. TrP's are painful when pressed and commonly seen in both acute and chronic pain conditions.

Dry Needling alleviates the symptoms of TrP's and is commonly used for the treatment of:

  •         neck pain
  •         jaw pain
  •        headaches and migraines
  •         muscular tightness/spasm
  •         stress
  •         chronic pain
  •         sports injuries
  •         shin splints
  •        hamstring and lower back conditions

Dry Needling Therapists at Charlie Lily Health and Wellness Centre are trained in the application of Dry Needling.
